How to Fish Desert Island Guide

The Desert — the island where money stops being a problem.

The Desert (Island 3) is the game's comfort zone: nearly every regular catch uses the same Standard Lure, the fishing is fast, and the island hands you the single best economy tool in the game — the grill. Two quests wait here: one that gives you cooking, one that gives you a carrot. Both are worth doing before you move on.

Getting Ready for the Desert

• Bring Standard Lures. Every regular Desert catch takes the Standard Lure — buy a handful so you never run out mid-session.
• Keep the Shotgun equipped. It handles the Blue Shark and the Pufferfish both.
• Expect two quests. One involves the grill NPC, the other a tourist under a tree. Do the grill quest first — the 1.5x sell multiplier pays for everything else.

The Desert's blue waters hide the game's first genuinely dangerous boss.

All Desert Fish

Twelve creatures call the Desert home: ten regular catches (including all three Endangered species in the game — Needlefish, Seahorse and Bowlfish), one optional mini-boss and the story boss. The Endangered trio sells for noticeably more than the standard Desert fish, so they're worth chasing while you're here.

The Blue Shark & the Grill

The Blue Shark is a mini-boss, but it's also the Desert's most important quest target — killing it unlocks cooking:

1. Buy a Standard Boss Lure and cast for the Blue Shark.
2. Defeat it. The shark's signature move is a spiral attack that tries to hit you as it closes in — keep moving sideways and punish it between spins. It's an easy boss overall.
3. Speak with the NPC beside the grill. He hands you a lighter.
4. Cook every fish you catch from now on. Grilled fish sell for a 1.5x multiplier — permanent, on every island, for the rest of the game.

The Tourist's Carrot Quest

Catch a Needlefish, trade it for a vegetable, go fishing. The game knows.

You'll find a tourist sitting under a tree, refusing to go near the water because he's afraid of a fish. His quest is short and a little ridiculous:

1. Equip a Standard Lure and catch a Needlefish (Endangered, $60).
2. Find the Tourist under the tree and give him the Needlefish.
3. Take the Carrot he gives you in return.
4. Equip the Carrot as bait and cast — the Pufferfish takes it instantly.

How to Beat the Pufferfish

The Pufferfish is the game's first genuinely dangerous boss, and it earns the reputation. It doesn't swim at you — it rolls after you like a wrecking ball, and getting caught in the roll hurts badly.

• Keep your distance at all times. The roll is fast and the turn radius is small — range is your only real defense.
• Shoot twice, then relocate. Fire two shots and immediately move in the opposite direction. The boss chases your old position, and you keep hitting it while it turns around.
• Repeat until it pops. The pattern is monotonous but reliable — it never adapts.
• Keep the white escape bar filled. Like every boss, it flees if the bar drains; keep up the pressure between reloads.

What Unlocks Next

Defeating the Pufferfish drops its fin — hand it to the tourist, and he gives you the coordinates for Island 4 (Rocks).
