Money is the real progression system โ€” everything else follows it.

Every island in How to Fish is a price tag: better lures, better weapons, better boats. This guide covers the fastest verified ways to earn โ€” from throwing clams at a lighthouse keeper to gambling your catch in a casino โ€” and the mistakes that quietly burn your balance.

How the Economy Works

The loop is simple: catch creatures, sell them, spend the cash on gear that catches better creatures. Sell values scale steeply with island tier โ€” a Brown Crab is worth $3, a Desert regular $46โ€“$150, a Rocks regular $250โ€“$380, and Volcano regulars $1,360โ€“$1,700. Three multipliers sit on top of those base values:

  • Trick shots โ€” stylish kills pay more.
  • Killstreak multiplier โ€” chained kills without dropping the chain multiply your take.
  • Grilled fish (1.5x) โ€” the permanent economy upgrade from Island 3.

Base prices are just the start โ€” multipliers stack on top.

If you're ever stuck on money, the answer is almost always "go to the highest island you've unlocked and farm its top regular catch."

Early Game: First Dollars

Before you own a rod, the Lighthouse Keeper is your bank: throw clams at him and he pays cash. It's slow, but it funds the $3 Basic Fishing Rod with zero risk.

Once fishing, the early income chain is:

  1. Brown Crab ($3) and Shrimp ($5) with the free lure โ€” fast, easy kills.
  2. Rock Crab ($7) and Lobster ($9) with Hot Dog lures โ€” better value once you can afford the $1 lures.
  3. First boss, first payday. The Spider Crab's meat completes the Keeper's quest and unlocks the boat โ€” the real money starts when you can reach the Forest.

Don't waste early cash on the Beginner Boss Lure or Dynamite โ€” neither is needed to progress, and the shotgun on Island 2 is a much better use of the same money.

The Grill: 1.5x Forever

The single best economic decision in the game happens on Island 3: beat the Blue Shark mini-boss (Standard Boss Lure), and the NPC beside the grill hands you a lighter. From that moment, every fish you cook sells for 1.5x its base value โ€” permanently, on every island, including the Volcano's expensive tier.

Fishing TipDo the grill quest before anything else on the Desert. A $1,700 Superdwarf Fish grilled is $2,550; a $8,000 Bowhead Whale grilled is $12,000. Never sell raw again.

Trick Shots & Killstreaks

The official game description says it plainly: hit trick shots for more money. The trick-shot system rewards flashy kills with a payout bonus, and the killstreak multiplier rewards chains of kills without breaks. Both stack with grilling, which is why skilled players out-earn casual ones by a wide margin even on the same island.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Chain your kills. Keep the streak alive and the multiplier climbs; let it drop and you're back to base prices.
  • Practice trick shots early. The 360-degree no-scope style shots are an achievement (and a chunk of change) โ€” cheap practice targets on the Lighthouse are free.
  • Bosses count. Speed-killing bosses (see tactics) pays the boss's high value plus whatever multiplier you carried in.

Boss Farming

Bosses and mini-bosses are the game's payday loans โ€” big value, bigger bait requirements:

CreatureSell ValueBait Required
Sunfish (mini-boss)$50Beginner Boss Lure
The Old Pike (mini-boss)$80Beginner Boss Lure
Blue Shark (mini-boss)$300Standard Boss Lure
Tuna (mini-boss)$2,000Professional Boss Lure
Goblin Shark (mini-boss)$6,200Scientific Boss Lure ($5,800)
Bowhead Whale (boss)$8,000Fish Bucket (quest)

Note the Tuna's catch-22: it's worth $2,000, but the Albatross quest needs the Tuna body as bait. Farm extras for cash, but always save one for the quest.

The Casino & Roulette

Big catches feed the casino โ€” just never with fish you need.

Late in the game you can gamble at the casino using low-value fish โ€” the casino accepts your least valuable catches as stakes. The roulette wheel is where the money (and the rare loot) lives:

  • Use trash fish, not your bankroll. Low-value catches are exactly what the casino wants โ€” you're converting junk into a shot at big payouts.
  • Weapon skins come from the roulette. The "Reel of Fortune" skin system is tied to spins, so gamblers end up with cosmetic loadouts too.
  • The All-In achievement rewards going all-in โ€” worth doing once for the achievement, but don't make it a habit.
Watch OutThe casino is a money sink disguised as a money source. Play with junk catches only; never stake fish you actually need for quests or collections.

What Never to Sell

  1. Quest drops from story bosses. Spider Crab meat, the Giant Piranha's skeleton, the Pufferfish's fin, the Albatross's head, the final boss's fin โ€” every one unlocks the next island.
  2. The Tuna body until the Albatross quest is done.
  3. The Bowhead Whale's body. It's the final boss's summoning trigger โ€” throw it into the volcano, don't put it on the market.
  4. Anything with a quest marker. When in doubt, check the encyclopedia (Tab) before selling.

And the reverse is also true: a fish can be worth more than its sale price if it's the one missing from your collection. Drip variants and endangered species are cheap to sell and expensive to re-find.

Smart Spending Order

  1. Basic Fishing Rod ($3) โ€” Lighthouse, minute five.
  2. Knife + sharpen (20 damage) โ€” before the Spider Crab.
  3. Radar ($10) โ€” end of Island 1; upgrade it when you can so it works hands-free.
  4. Shotgun โ€” Island 2. The best all-round weapon in the game.
  5. Standard + Professional lures โ€” as you hit Islands 3 and 4.
  6. Uzi or Sniper Rifle โ€” Island 4, for the Albatross's range.
  7. Assault Rifle + upgrades โ€” Island 5, for the whales.

Everything past the shotgun is optional until its island demands it. The walkthrough shows where each purchase pays off, and the fish database has every sell value in one place.
